War years at Pengam

In August 1936 a decision was made to build a R.Aux A.F station at Pengam and resulted in the purchase of the allotments on the edge of the field to make pengam a larger site.
In September 1986 construction began on the building of hangars and other buildings, the construction of the buildings was rapid and was compleated by 1938. (see documents section for a site plan dated 1944)

June 1937 at Pengam airport, Wales first auxiliary squadron was formed the 614 Squadron and was given a Army co-operation role in No22 group, before a full squadron could be trained, the war started.
By September 1939 the squadron had been equipped with a number of aircraft and a station commander was posted.

In October the squadron moved to R.A.F Odiham Hampshire where they took part in intensive training to bring them up to operational standard but this didnt mean that pengam airport was left deserted.
J.Currans, Air Dispatch Co was kept busy and different support units made pengam there home.

January 1940 the 815 Squadron flew to pengam to develop flying anti-submarine patrols to keep the submarines from surfacing.

In November 1940 No.8 Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Unit arrived to assist the 9th Anti-Aircraft Division in the south wales area with training. They made pengam there home for 3 years untill they disbanded.

Vast quantities of army supplies were held at pengam, The Americans had stores here for when supplies was needed in france.

286 Squadron also had a detatchment to pengam at various times between 1942 and 1945.

663 Squadron also spent some time at pengam.
